What is White Noise

When a father-to-be puts an ear to his wife’s belly, despite all kinds of noisy gurgles and rumbles he hears, he may still think the baby inside is in a peaceful heaven. But this is not what it seems to be. The sound we hear from outside may be slight but inside the belly, it’s another world.

Fetus starts to hear sound at roughly 18 weeks. They become more sensitive to sound when at 24 weeks and they can finally respond to sound at about 25-26 weeks. Baby in the womb can hear your heartbeat, your flowing blood, your growling stomach, your voice and even the sound from outside world. More and more sounds are audible to them as weeks pass by. This is the reason why there is not that quiet as we think in the womb.

Baby will feel secure and comfortable if you recreate these sounds to them. And white noise is exactly this kind of sound that is similar to what babies have heard in the womb. It may be a little noisy but is what baby is familiar with.  If you want to calm down your fussy baby, you can try turning on a white noise machine and see how it works on your baby.

Part 1. White Noise Definition

White noise is a type of noise that is produced by combining sounds of all different frequencies together. If you took all of the imaginable tones that a human can hear and combined them together, you would have white noise. In an easier-to-understand way, white noise is a mixture of sounds that have high and low pitches and everything in between. The combination of these sounds will drown out most of the other sounds.

Part 2. How Does White Sound Work

White noise can be used to mask the annoying sound that is obviously clear. This is like, when the next-door neighbors are talking loudly and you turn on a fan to get rid of the unwanted voice. If the voice can still be heard, you can turn on a professional white noise machine loud enough until that kind of sound is drowned out. This also explains how white noise works – the particular one sound drowns in the all-frequency sound so you can’t pick out that sound any longer.

Part 3. Why Infant White Noise Can Calm Baby Down

On the one hand, white noise drowns out other house noises to help baby focus less on those other noises. On the other hand, the womb-like white noise sound is comforting to your baby, especially a newborn who can not quickly adapt to the new environment. So this is why parents play white noise to calm the baby - simply turn on white noise machine and baby feels back to the womb magically – and this is definitely what our baby white noise machine is aiming at. Part 4. White Noise Application

According to the feature above, white noise is widely used in different situations. Teachers and students use white noise to concentrate on study if there is construction noise. Nighttime workers use white noise to make sure they have an undisturbed sleep in daytime. White noise is also implemented into the sirens of police car, ambulance use and fire trucks to attract people’s attention. Parents turn on baby sleep music white noise to soothe baby to sleep. In daily life, you can get white noise free by using radio, fans, air-conditioner. If you find these ways not ideal – can’t be used in winter or the volume is uncontrolled. You can use dedicated white noise machine to create white noise sounds for baby.

Playing white noise is just one of the ways to lull fussy baby by recreating the scene that baby was familiar with before. Swaddling baby, getting the baby moving are also ways to comfort crying baby based on the same principle, (more ways to stop baby crying). They swaddle the babies making them not able to wriggle their arms and legs free because this is similar to what they felt in the womb. They put baby in a swing, cradle him in a rocking chair or lay him in a vibrating infant seat since babies have been used to a lot of motion in the belly. Think of these, white noise is not that hard to understand any longer.
